Zuni Mountains
The Cibola National Forest is home to this magnificent mountain range, with massive monoliths and meandering pathways through the natural landscape. As you explore, you’ll rise up an 800-ft gain in elevation while ponderosa pines sway around you. The single-track trail runs for more than 25 miles, and although there typically isn’t a crowd, the trail can accommodate hikers as well as mountain bikers and joggers, allowing you to wander on foot or on wheels.
Red Rock Park Trails
In addition to a host of other recreation and entertainment options like camping and rodeos, this park offers several engaging trials for a hike into the Mars-like wilderness. Red Rock Park leads visitors around a stunning rocky landscape that can often seem out of this world. The popular Pyramid Rock trail leads you by ancient outcroppings and rock formations as you approach an incredible overlook at the summit. As you explore, you can stop to read signs that offer insight on the site’s unique geography and history. The Church Rock Trail promises a great look at the massive sandstone spires known as Church rock, and the whole trek is a brisk two miles round-trip.
High Desert Trail System
This single-track trail offers something for hikers of all skill levels. Those looking for an easy start can begin their trek at the East Trail, while the various loops of the First, Second, and Third Mesas provide more challenging terrain. Spanning 28 miles, the desert trail is popular among hikers, so it’s always possible that you might encounter some fellow explorers on your hike. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to explore with you as well. Due to its undepictable environs, officials advise that the trail should only be hiked during clear weather conditions.
