At a workbench, just beyond the reach of a lichen-spotted alligator juniper tree, artist Jude Candelaria carefully puts the finishing touches on a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. It’s the latest in a collection of eye-catching creations at Flux Tufa Works, where Candelaria continues his family’s silversmith tradition while also expressing his own ideas and showcasing the work of other artists.
Tradition and Imagination
Candelaria is a fourth-generation Zuni silversmith, and while he’s honed his craft with a deep understanding of its long-running traditions, he’s devoted Flux Tufa Works to highlighting contemporary designs. He and the artists he showcases each month explore the present and future of Native American art, embracing both their heritage as well as pop culture. It’s art made as modern expression by a new generation of artists, branching out from the handcrafted goods and familiar designs you might find at a trading post.
Finding Flux Tufa Works
Hours are subject to change, but Flux Tufa Works is open six days per week. From Tuesday to Saturday, it’s open at 9 a.m., and on Monday, it’s open at 1 p.m. It closes at 5 p.m. each day except for Saturday, when it closes at 3 p.m. The gallery is located downtown at 211 W Coal Avenue, Gallup, New Mexico 87301.
